What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a condition that causes ringing in the ears.

What causes ringing in the ears?

Ringing in the ear or tinnitus has been attributed to prolonged exposure to loud sounds, jaw, or TMJ conditions, certain medications, earwax buildup, head or neck injuries and hearing loss.

What is the main cause of tinnitus?

The main causes of tinnitus are varied however, constant exposure to loud noises has been a predominant cause.

What is the most effective treatment for tinnitus?

An effective treatment for tinnitus includes a sound match of the patient's tinnitus sound.

How do I stop the ringing in my ears?

Ringing in the ears can be reduced through sound therapy, such as that offered by the Levo System.

What is habituation for tinnitus?

Habituation is one of the most basic forms of learning. It is the process by which we 'get used to' a sensory input. Through non-threatening exposure to a sensory input, your brain can gradually learn to ignore your unique tinnitus sound.

Why nightly sleep therapy?

Sleep is a heightened time of learning and organization for the brain. The brain is most responsive to sensory input during times when distractions are low. Improvements to sleep quality lead to increased tolerance of tinnitus. Depression and anxiety are reduced when quality of sleep is improved.

What is the Tinnitus Functional Index?

The Tinnitus Functional Index (or TFI) is exclusively integrated within the Levo System. Developed as a collaborative effort among researchers and clinicians to develop a standard questionnaire, the TFI is an evaluation that measures the level of negative impact tinnitus has on a patient. It can also be used pre and post sound therapy to determine changes as a response to therapy.

What is an audiologist?

Audiologists diagnose and treat patients who have hearing loss and/or tinnitus.

Can tinnitus go away on its own?

Short term or temporary tinnitus (ringing in the ears) can dissipate after a few days or weeks. Chronic tinnitus requires treatment.

Can tinnitus be cured?

There is no known cure for tinnitus.

What if I have tinnitus in one ear only?

Tinnitus can be in one ear or both. Unilateral tinnitus can be treated with the Levo System.

Can tinnitus cause vertigo? Can tinnitus affect your balance?

One of the symptom's of tinnitus is dizziness and lack of balance.

Why does tinnitus get worse at night?

At night, tinnitus symptoms increase due to the fact that there is a reduction in ambient sound.

Do hearing aids help tinnitus?

Hearing preservation is important to all who have hearing loss however hearing aids are not the most effective treatment for tinnitus.

Is the Levo System regulated and FDA cleared?

The Levo System is cleared for sale in the US, EU, and Canada. The Levo System received FDA 510(k) clearance on July 18, 2014, includes software, ear buds and Apple® mobile digital devices, and was among the first to clear Apple® hardware as a medical device. The Levo System received its CE Mark on March 24, 2014 and is licensed by Health Canada. The entire system is CSA Certified, which includes software, hardware, and Apple® mobile digital devices and has IEEE Third Edition Medical Device Electrical Safety 60601-1-1. Otoharmonics is ISO 13485 Certified for the design and manufacture of medical devices. All development was done under ISO 13485 standards.

How much does the Levo System cost? Is tinnitus covered by insurance?

Patient cost is between $4,000- $7,000 depending on the patients specific needs, however, veterans may obtain the Levo System through their VA benefits. VA and Workers Compensation pay for the Levo System, private insurance only pays for the Audiologist (or Physician) visit and diagnostic workup.

Is tinnitus considered a disability?

Tinnitus is a recognized medical condition and as such can cause varying degrees of disability.

Does tinnitus qualify for VA disability?

Yes, the VA recognizes tinnitus as a disability.

How do I file a tinnitus VA claim?

The Levo System, a treatment for tinnitus, is available to Veterans under an FSS agreement. The VA pays for the diagnosis and treatment of tinnitus for Veterans.

When should I see a doctor for tinnitus?

Seek out a doctor if your tinnitus symptoms prevent you from doing things as you normally would, loss of concentration, loss of sleep, anxiety, can all be caused by tinnitus.
